Enshrouded Legendary Weapons Guide: Drop Rates, Runes and Upgrades

Legendary gear in Enshrouded 1.0 is gated by two numbers, and only one of them is a drop rate. The official patch notes state that the chance for legendary items was increased by 5% for all chests, and separately that legendary items now require legendary runes one upgrade step later than before. Everything else that changed around them is a chest-tier reshuffle: wooden chests can now roll a weapon or armor piece at silver chest level, and common tier loot was removed from silver chest lists entirely.

  • The legendary chance on all chests went up by 5% in 1.0, per the official changelog.
  • Legendary upgrades need legendary runes one step later in the upgrade path.
  • Wooden chests can now produce gear at silver chest level.
  • Silver chests no longer drop common tier loot.
  • Player level caps at 50, and fully upgraded equipment caps at level 55.

What makes an item legendary

Enshrouded grades gear by rarity, and the terms the game uses in its own patch notes are common, rare, epic and legendary. The tier is not just a stat multiplier. Higher rarity means more upgrade steps and stronger perks, which is how a legendary can end up either the best item you own or a very expensive mistake.

Two systems feed into what a legendary is actually worth.

  • Upgrades. Gear improves through upgrade steps up to a fully upgraded equipment level of 55. A legendary that has never been upgraded is often worse than a fully upgraded epic.
  • Perks and gems. The 1.0 patch improved the stats and perks of a large number of weapons and rebalanced several weapon gems, so a legendary with a badly matched perk set can lose to a well-built lower rarity item.

The purchase path differs by item type. Crafted armor sets now unlock automatically as the Flame is upgraded, while weapons and gear most often come from chests and loot, which is why chest behaviour is the lever that matters for legendary farming.

The +5% legendary chance change in 1.0

The official line is one sentence: increased the chance for legendary items by +5% for all chests. It is the only legendary drop rate figure the 1.0 patch notes publish, and it applies globally rather than to a specific chest type or biome.

That wording is worth reading carefully. The notes say the chance was increased by 5%, which is a relative increase on whatever the previous chance was, not a flat 5% legendary rate. Treating it as "every chest is 5% legendary" would overstate the change. Keen Games did not publish per-chest legendary percentages alongside the patch, so any exact figure you see quoted is either data-mined or estimated.

The number is relative, not absolute

A 5% increase means the existing chance goes up by a fifth of itself, not that a fifth of your chests contain legendaries. The practical effect is a modest, global boost that you will feel over a farming session rather than from a single chest.

The same patch moved the rest of the chest economy around it, and those changes are easier to observe:

Chest or loot change 1.0 behaviour
All chests Legendary item chance increased by 5%
Wooden chests Can contain a weapon or armor piece at silver chest level
Silver chests Common tier loot removed from the loot list
Loot chests across Embervale Gold coins added as a resource
Springlands and Revelwood More loot chests added, aimed at early-game gearing
Hollow Hall end rooms Cost of opening chests reduced by 25%

The wooden chest change is the sleeper. A wooden chest is the cheapest chest in the game and now has a route to the tier above it, which means early exploration has a real payoff instead of a stack of common materials.

Chest tiers and what each drops now

The tiers are not a published table from Keen Games, so this is a summary of what the patch notes actually describe rather than a complete drop table.

  • Wooden chests can contain a weapon or armor piece at the level of a silver chest. The rest of their loot is unchanged by the notes.
  • Silver chests no longer include common tier loot, which raises the effective floor of what you pull out of them.
  • End rooms in Hollow Halls still hold the most expensive chests in the game, but opening them costs 25% less than before.
  • Every chest in Embervale now has a legendary chance that is 5% higher than in 0.8, and every chest can drop gold coins.

One fix is worth noting for anyone who was farming chests early. The patch added a silver chest to a suspicious-looking pile of rubble in the settlement Mark of Sameth, and separately fixed a treasure chest in a level 30 night sanctum that was dropping level 1 loot. Both are the kind of thing that quietly wastes a farming route if you are working from old notes.

Rune costs and the upgrade shift

Runes are the upgrade material, and in 1.0 the top of the upgrade path moved. The official notes state that legendary items require legendary runes one upgrade step later than before. That is a shift in where in the path the cost lands, not a statement that legendary gear became cheaper or more expensive overall.

Where runes come from matters, then. Salvaging gear produces runes, and one specific hotfix line confirms it: Hotfix 1.0.0.2 fixed a bug where salvaging gear in a storage chest, with a completely filled backpack, caused the salvaged runes to simply disappear. If your rune stock seemed smaller than it should be after the first days of 1.0, that bug is the likely explanation, and it is fixed.

Two more upgrade facts are part of the same system:

  • Crafting survivors for the different combat classes now offer upgrade services for eternal spells and eternal arrows, which upgrade like weapons and carry perks.
  • Crafted armor sets unlock automatically each time the Flame is upgraded, so armor tier and Flame level move together.

Farming legendaries efficiently

There is no published legendary farming route from the developer, so these are the levers the 1.0 patch actually moved rather than a claimed best spot.

  • Run the chests you can already open. The legendary chance increase applies to all chests, so chest volume beats chest quality for raw legendary attempts.
  • Clear Hollow Hall end rooms. They contain the heaviest chests in the game, and 1.0 cut the cost of opening them by 25%, so the resource cost per attempt dropped.
  • Farm early regions. Springlands and Revelwood received more loot chests in 1.0 with the stated goal of giving players more gear to experiment with and more runes to upgrade it.
  • Open wooden chests anyway. They can now produce silver chest level gear, so skipping them is leaving attempts on the table.
  • Salvage the failures. Runes come out of salvaging, and the backpack-full bug that ate them is fixed.

The honest limit is that none of this produces a guaranteed legendary. The documented change is a 5% relative boost to every chest in the game, which rewards doing more chests rather than finding a new secret one.

When a legendary is worse than a good epic

This happens more often than the rarity colour suggests, for three reasons the 1.0 patch notes make explicit.

  • Perk fit. The patch improved the stats and perks of a large number of weapons, which means a well-rolled lower rarity weapon can carry perks your legendary does not.
  • Gems. Weapon gems were rebalanced, with Gem of Battle Mania and Gem of Obsession losing some stats while Gem of Toxic Reaction gained damage, described in the notes as a +21% dps on level 10 up to 65% on level 50. The gem matters as much as the weapon it sits in.
  • Upgrade cost. With legendary runes required one step later, an unfinished legendary is a large materials commitment that may not beat something you can finish now.

Two related balance changes are worth knowing because they affect gear decisions outside the rarity race. Weapon gems no longer negatively affect animals in player bases, and Gem of Lesser Necromancy now limits how many resurrected companions it can spawn, with necromancy companions losing health after a while out of combat.

The practical rule is to compare finished items, not raw drops. A legendary that you can fully upgrade is usually the right target. A legendary that stalled at the rune step while a silver chest epic is complete is not.

FAQ

What is the legendary drop rate in Enshrouded 1.0? The official patch notes give one figure: the chance for legendary items was increased by 5% for all chests. Keen Games did not publish exact per-chest percentages, so treat any specific rate as an estimate.

Do legendary items need different runes now? Yes. Legendary items require legendary runes one upgrade step later than before, so the turn where the rune cost lands in the upgrade path has moved.

Which chests can drop legendaries? All chests share the +5% legendary chance change. Wooden chests additionally gained the ability to contain a weapon or armor piece at silver chest level, and silver chests no longer drop common tier loot.

How do I get runes? Salvaging gear produces runes. Hotfix 1.0.0.2 fixed a bug where salvaging from a storage chest with a full backpack made the salvaged runes disappear.

What is the maximum gear level? Fully upgraded equipment caps at level 55, while the player level cap is 50.

Why does my legendary feel weak? Perk fit, gem choice and upgrade completion. The 1.0 patch rebalanced weapon gems and improved weapon perks broadly, so a mismatched legendary can lose to a finished lower rarity item.
