Elixir Wells in Enshrouded: Locations and What They Do

An Enshrouded Elixir Well is a Shroud pocket with a Shroud Root at the bottom. What it awards, why it may not reset, and what 1.0 did and did not change.

Enshrouded Elixir Wells: What They Do and Where to Find Them

An Elixir Well is a Shroud location with a Shroud Root waiting at the bottom of it. Cut that Root and every nearby Flameborn gets skill points. Wells are not a separate progression system with their own currency - they are the Shroud's origin points, and they double as some of the best concentrated skill-point income in the game.

  • Felling the Shroud Root inside a Well awards skill points, per the official wiki's description of the system.
  • The official wiki tracks nineteen Elixir Wells across Embervale.
  • Keen's 1.0 changelog does not mention Elixir Wells at all, so the system was not rewritten for release.
  • The points are one-time only. The world respawns after a server restart; your skill points do not come back with it.
One important caveat before you read on

Elixir Wells are an early access era system that Keen did not document in the 1.0 patch notes. Everything below that is not from the official wiki is labelled as community reporting, and I am not publishing a coordinate list because I could not verify one against a 1.0 source.

What an Elixir Well is

The official wiki's summary is compact and worth quoting in substance: the Shroud springs forth from the Elixir Wells throughout Embervale, and you fell the Shroud Root at their depths to receive skill points for all nearby Flameborn.

That single sentence tells you most of what matters. A Well is not a building you interact with for a menu buff. It is a Shroud pocket with an interior - a descent, a fight, and a Root at the end. The reward is skill points, the same currency you spend in the skill tree, and the award is shared with players who are nearby when the Root goes down.

This is why Wells matter more than their size suggests. Every point you get from a Well is a point you do not have to earn by levelling, and the tree cannot be filled from levelling alone.

What a Well is What it is not
A Shroud location with a Shroud Root inside A crafting station or vendor
A source of skill points for nearby players A repeatable daily or a farmable resource node
An early access era system untouched by the 1.0 notes A 1.0 feature, despite the Shroud also being reworked in 1.0

Where they turn up across Embervale

The honest answer for 1.0 is: the same places they were before, because nothing in the patch notes moved them.

The official wiki lists nineteen Elixir Wells. I am not reproducing a coordinate table for them, for a simple reason - the wiki figure is the only count I can verify, and a wrong waypoint list is worse than no list. Enshrouded 1.0 released on October 15, 2026 for PC and PlayStation 5, and the Xbox Series X and S version is planned for spring 2027 (Steam store page), so a player picking the game up today may be working from early access maps that predate the 1.0 world changes. Instead, here is how to find a Well reliably with tools you already have.

  1. Read the Shroud from above. Wells sit inside Shroud regions, and the Shroud is visible from any high vantage point or from the Ancient Spires you unlock for fast travel.
  2. Follow the main quest for your first one. Community walkthroughs consistently place a required Well in the Shrouded area north of the starting base, which is where most players learn the system.
  3. Expect a fight at the bottom. Community write-ups mention an elite or heavy guardian protecting the Root inside at least the story Well, and the same reports describe the fight as the reason to arrive with upgraded gear rather than starting equipment on your back.
  4. Use Return Beacons and save points. Getting in is easier than getting out when your Shroud timer is running down.

Because 1.0 added three new save points inside the Nomad Highlands Shroud and made shrouded regions easier to navigate out of, a failed Well attempt is less punishing now than it was in early access - even though the Well itself was not changed. Patch notes after launch are posted to the official Enshrouded news page and the Steam announcement feed, which is where any future change to this system would show up first.

How the Elixir side actually works

This is the part where most pages fill in details that nobody can verify, so here is what I can and cannot confirm.

What is confirmed: a Well contains a Shroud Root, felling it awards skill points to nearby Flameborn, and the official wiki's skill point breakdown assigns three points per Elixir Well. In multiplayer the requirement is that you are online and nearby when the Root is destroyed - destroy it without a friend in range and their point is simply not awarded.

What is not confirmed: claims that each Well produces a specific stat-boosting elixir or a permanent buff. Several third-party sites describe wells as producing stat-boost potions, and the official wiki's Elixir Well page does not describe any such reward. Keen has not published anything about it either, so treat the buff claim as unverified.

If there is an elixir reward system layered on top of the points, it is undocumented as of 1.0. That is the most useful thing to know: you are going to a Well for the skill points and the Shroud route, not for a guaranteed consumable.

Official source: Release trailer, changelog and everything you need - the 1.0 notes cover Shroud time, capsules and new Shroud Roots, and never mention Elixir Wells.

Why a well may not reset

If you cleared a Well and its Root is back but you got no points, that is expected behaviour rather than a bug.

The world respawns when a server restarts, and that includes Shroud Roots and the enemies around them. The skill points attached to each Well and each Root, however, are paid once per character. You can fight the same Root again, but the point has already been banked. The same rule applies to Shroud Roots outside Wells.

Three other explanations are worth checking before you file anything:

Symptom Likely cause
Root is back, no skill point awarded You already cleared it. Awards are one-time per character
No point in multiplayer while your friend got one You were too far away when the Root was destroyed. Points go to nearby Flameborn only
Cannot find the Well again after a patch Shroud regions were reworked in 1.0, and structures inside the Shroud were adjusted. Re-navigate from a save point instead of trusting an old route
Points missing after the 1.0 update The 1.0 skill tree reset refunded points to your pool. They exist, unspent, in the tree

That last row catches people every time. If your total looks short by the exact amount you spent before the patch, it is the reset, not a lost Well award. The skill tree reset guide walks through how to respend them.

Getting the most out of a run

A Well run is a Shroud run, so the preparation is the same as any deep Shroud trip - with the added twist that the reward is at the bottom, which is the worst place to run out of time.

  • Time your entry. 1.0 reduced how much total time you can stack from Shroud extensions, but hourglass capsules now appear in many more places and each one adds roughly 70 percent more time. Pick capsules up on the way in rather than saving them. The Shroud mechanics guide covers the timer and protection options in full.
  • Do the fight with the gear you want to use, not the gear you have. Community reports agree that the guardian inside a Well is the real obstacle, and a Root itself does not fight back.
  • Bring a ranged option even on a melee character. The ranger build and mage build both handle the approach to a Well better than a melee-only kit, because the interior forces you down into a confined space.
  • Kill on the way through. Survival Instinct, one of the new 1.0 skills, restores Shroud time when you defeat a Shroud-infested enemy with a bow or dagger. Every ordinary enemy between you and the Root is potential time back.
  • Plan the exit before you need it. New save points in the Nomad Highlands Shroud and a reworked navigation pass make the walk out less of a coin flip, but the timer does not care how confident you feel.

Elixir Wells sit in a small family of Shroud locations, and it helps to know which one pays what.

Shroud Roots outside Wells award one skill point each and are the main reason to explore the new world edges. 1.0 added eighteen of them: twelve in the new region Cinder's Cradle and six spread across the older biomes near the edges of the world, bringing the community-tracked total well above the early access figure. The official notes confirm the additions directly, including the detail that the achievement for felling Shroud Roots was updated so returning players do not have to re-clear old ones. The Shroud Roots guide maps out where the new ones sit.

Hollow Halls are the other Shroud-adjacent destination. Two new ones opened in 1.0, one in the Albaneve Summits and one in the Veilwater Basin, and the weapons found inside were reworked to be particularly effective against the Hollow while staying useful outside. End room chest costs were also reduced, which makes a Hollow Halls trip a reasonable alternative when you want gear instead of points. The Hollow Halls guide lists both new locations.

Between the two, Wells are the efficient stop when the reset has left you short of points, and Halls are the efficient stop when you need a weapon.

FAQ

What does an Elixir Well do in Enshrouded? The Shroud springs from the Elixir Wells across Embervale, and a Shroud Root waits at the bottom of each one. Felling that Root awards skill points to nearby Flameborn, which makes Wells one of the main sources of skill points outside levelling.

How many Elixir Wells are in Enshrouded? The official wiki lists nineteen. Keen has not published a count in the 1.0 patch notes, and the 1.0 changelog does not mention Elixir Wells at all, so nineteen is the number to work from rather than an official figure.

Why is my Elixir Well not respawning or not giving points? The world respawns after a server restart, so the Root reappears - but each Well and Root only awards its skill points once per character. If you are in multiplayer and your friend got a point while you did not, you were probably out of range when the Root was destroyed.

Did 1.0 change Elixir Wells? No. Keen's 1.0 changelog does not mention Elixir Wells, so the system was not rewritten for release. What 1.0 did change is everything around it: Shroud time stacking, hourglass capsule availability, three new save points in the Nomad Highlands Shroud, and eighteen new Shroud Roots across the map.

Do Elixir Wells give a buff or a potion? Several third-party sites say each Well yields a stat-boosting elixir. I could not verify that against the official wiki or any Keen material, so treat it as unconfirmed. The verified reward is skill points from the Root inside.
